STEWART DAWSON CASE

DEFENDANT COMMITTED FOR TRIAL SYDNEY, October 18. On a charge of maliciously wounding George Rankin Mackay with intent to do grievous bodily harm, David Stewart Dawson, aged 24, a company director, was committed for trial at the Manly Court to-day. At the conclusion of the five-day hearing, the magistrate said he proposed to alter the charge from one 1 of maliciously wounding to one of malicious wounding with intent. The maximum penalty for the former is five years’ imprisonment and for the latter life. Bail was fixed at £BOO. The defendant pleaded not gniltv and reserved his defence. During cross-examination, Mrs Mary Ann Verspoor, aged 20, alleged that private detectives followed her home last night. Mr Shand, counsel for the defence, said it must have been the police, but the prosecuting sergeant denied this. ,
