SOUTH AFRICANS’ GIFT TO BRITAIN (Rec. 10 a.m.) LONDON, October 18. Over,. £1,000,000 for the people of Britain was formally handed over by Field-Marshal Smuts to Mr Attlee in a ceremony in the Cabinet room at No. 10 Downing Street. The gift took the form of a gold certificate for £985,000 “ with no conditions attached ” except that it be used for the advantage of the British people, also a bank draft for £196,625, which was an offering especially from the people of Durban and the province of Natal. Field-Marshal Smuts said the gift was a symbol through which -the people of South Africa wished to express their admiration for the conduct of the British people in the Second World War. He added that the money was collected by South Africa’s People of Britain Fund. The condition attaching to Natal’s gift provided that part of the funds should be spent on a hospital or a limilar utilitarian rriemorial. Mr Attlee said he would consult with the utmost care to see how the gift could best be used. He felt that the people of South Africa would like the money to be devoted to purposes which would serve the needs of ordinary men and women.
