COUNCIL OF CHURCHES

SUNDAY EVENING SERVICES Inquiries instituted as to the possibility of beginning Sunday evening services at 7 o’clock instead of 6.30 showed that Presbyterian sessions were almost unanimously opposed to a change, reported the Rev. A. Reid Harper at the monthly meeting .of the Otago branch of the National Council of Churches. Reports from other churches were not available.. An appeal was received for assistance towards the funds to endow a chair of obstetrics at Auckland, and it was decided that this matter be referred to the churches, so that all possible help might be given. It was stated that the National Council, in conjunction with the National Missionary Council, had forwarded a fraternal letter through General MacArthur to the Church in Japan. It was proposed that the proposed Conference on Faith and Order, for which 20 groups met fortnightly throughout' the Dominion preparing material, would be held in August and September of next year, with a preparatory commission meeting in February next. It was decided to send congratulations to the Rev. H. W. Newell, secretary of the National Council of Churches at Geneva. Mr J. Farquharson reported on the combined action of Presbyterian, Methodist, and Congregational Clinches in setting up a community church in the Corstorphine housing area. He. stated that the numerous committee meetings had themselves developed a spirit of unity.
