Compact Fields for Second Day at Forbury Park
[By Observer.!
. The fields for the second day of the Forbury Park meeting will be smaller than last Saturday, but the racing should be none the less interesting. The ram which fell during the past few days will affect the going, although it may not be really heavy. First day form should prove the best guide for to-morrow, but the changed track conditions may complicate matters for punters. The President’s Handicap, principal event for pacers, has drawn a field of nine, while the Churchill Handicap, with 1 1 trotters engaged, should prove one of the best races of. the day. In the latter event fresh horses in Mistydale and Maximum will add interest to the race.

Gain scr .Brackets: Elverne and Water Weed, Barbara Woods and My Gain., Sure Maid would only need to trot evenly to be returned a winner. She showed brilliant speed last Saturday, but wrecked her chance by breaking badly on two occasion?. Mack Sure rag his best race to date in the Bayfield Handicap to finish a good second to Lucky Bill. He appears to be more solid how and will again be a good prospect. Of the remainder on the limit mark nothing appeals more than Water Weed, who ran a good race last Saturday once he settled down. He irfay even shape better to-morrow. From the 60yds marie, -Lucky Bill will not find his task an easy, one, and Percy Volo may prove a better prospect. Several of the runners on the first day broke up badly and are not betting propositions, although, no doubt they would be dangerous if they kept their feet. The form horses are: Sure Maid. Mack Sure. Water Weed. 12-15-BT.KILDA HANDICAP, £325. Class 3.33. He has been racing consistently in recent weeks and is due for a win again. Royal Gamble left the impression that a race would improve him and he is likely to provide
stiff opposition to-morrow. Special Effort, who never really threatened danger in the St. Clair Handicap, struggled- into fourth place after two runners had fallen. Shadow Chimes and Limerick Pride were both going well when they fell. If the fall has not .affected Shadow Chimes he will be one of the hardest to beat. Limerick Pride was produced again later in theday to finish a good second. He is 6n a bad mark in this race and may shape better later in the day. Those selected are: • ■ Branford. Royal Gamble. Shadow Chimes. I_DOMAIN HANDICAP. £450. Class 4.40. 1 2m. ) 0040-Convincer scr 0000-Janet Hall 12-4142-Real 3204-Lord PeterNugget ... scr • son 12 3000-Volo’s 0300-Notus ... 12 Victory ... scr 0000-Mae 0120-Frank Wynne (T.) 24 Scott (T.) 12 Convincer ran a useful race to finish fourth last Saturday in a similar event, while Volo’s Victory showed patches of speed in both his races. It is reported that Volo’s Victory will have a change of drivers. Ileal Nugget forced the pace all the way last Saturday, and hung on gamely for second when challenged by Stimulant. A similar performance to-morrow would land him a winner. ■ Frank Scott was responsible for an outstanding effort to draw level with Real Nugget after being well back over the early stages. Janet Hall and No'tus both raced well below form, while Lord Peterson lo.it his chance at the barrier, and later showed brilliant speed in racing up to the leaders. Mae Wynne is a goad trotter, who js not without prospects. The winner may come from: — Real Nugget. Lord Peterson. Frank Scott. - 1.45 PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP. £7OO. Class 4.36. 2m. 0030-Bicn Sur scr 0040-Play Safe scr 0004-Castlebar scr 0000-Monagh 0000-Doonholriie per Leagh ... 24 0030-Logan Rey scr 3112-Stimulant 24 00tf5-Paddy 0021-Imperial Potts ... scr Grattan 48 After being fractious at the barrier last Saturday, Bien Sur, who was a hot favourite for the Flying Handicap, reared up when the tapes were re-
leased and took little part in the race. Castlebar showed speed'in both his races last Saturday, hut failed to stay. Doonholme and Paddy Potts both failed to begin correctly in the King George Handicap, while _ the lastnamed" was produced again in the Flying Handicap and finished third. Logan Hey and Monagh Leagh did not race impressively last Saturday, and would need to show considerable improvement. Pbiy Safe ran a useful race in
the King George Handicap, and finished close up after being with the leaders throughout. Stimulant won well over two miles against a slower class' last Saturday, and he promises to be one of the hardest to beat again this week, imperial Grattan won in this class on the first day ater having his sulky damaged early in the race, and must be considered again, even though he is 48,yds behind. If Bien Sur begins smartly from the limit the backmarkers will find it difficult to catch him. The best prospects are:— Stimulant. Imperial Grattan. Bien Sur. 2.30—* CHURCHILL HANDICAP, £SOO. Class 3.51. lm sf. 1003-Royal Stone scr 3004-Lee Berry 36 2131-Maximum 12 0200-Nationalist 36 0000-Fighting 0001-Castigate 48 Friend ... 24 0120-Frank Scott 60 0442-Royal Dale 24 0000-Mae 4404-Mistydale 24 Wynne ... 72 2looKildonnin 36 Brackets: Royal Slone and Royal Dale, Fighting Friend and Lee- Berry. Unfortunately, the trotters’ race was robbed of interest on the first day through several of the well-fancied candidates breaking ,up badly in the first half of the race. The Royal DaleRoyal Stone bracket will probably be made favourite" on the strength of their solid performance in the Freyberg Handicap. The strongest opposition may come from Mistydale, a very reliable trotter,’ who was not started in that race. A fresh horse in Maximum lias been racing well of late and will add interest to the result. Castigate would only need to reproduce last Saturday’s form to again bevery hard to heat. He is very unreliable, however, and is a horse of moods. Lee Berry, fourth last Saturday, will again be dangerous, while the remainder will need to show considerable improvement to be given a chance. Those selected are . Royal Dale bracket. Mistydale. Maximum. 3.15- • ROYAL HANDICAP, £375. Class 3.29. l[ui. 0000-Counl. 2030-Shadow Fosco ... scr Chimes ... scr 2000-DonaTd 0002-L'imerick Dinnie ... scr Pride ... 12 0210-Lady Vi ... scr 2201-Mountain 1100-Saiid Piter scr Hall 12 0304-Scottish 0023-Stirling L'ord ... scr Castle ... 12 Mountain Hall won so well last Saturday that he shoiild not find the tighter class too good for him.. He will have something in his favour in that lie will be driven by W. R. Butt, who is one of the best reinsmen in the Dominion. Lady Vi was eliminated at the start last Saturday when she lost her driver. She won impressively
at the Otago Hunt meeting and should be prominent in this field. Stirling Castle ran a useful race to finish third in the Peninsula Handicap and is a likely improver. Scottish Lord is not without prospects, while Limerick Pride and Shadow Chimes will both be in demand if they shape well earlier in the day. The favourites may be: — Mountain Hall. Lady Vi. Stirling Castle. 4.0VICTORY HANDICAP, £4OO. Class 3.8. Wade Lane will probably be elected faVourite after his good win on the first day, while Scottish Actress, who was second in the same class last week, will again find support. Lord Peterson, Real 'Nugget, and Volo’s Victory will he suited by the distance and if started' will be in demand. Those favoured are:— Wade Lane. ' Lord Peterson. Real Nugget. 4.45FAREWELL HANDICAP, £SOO. Several are smart sprinter and unless their form earlier in the day is not impressive the following should give a good account of themselves : Bien Sur. Stimulant. Paddy Potts.
