IDLE SHIPS
SYDNEY WATERFRONT DEADLOCK NO ATTEMPTS AT SETTLEMENT SYDNEY, October 17. No attempts are yet being made to settle the waterfront deadlock, which has immobilised 57. ships.- Sydney faces a potato famine as there is a shortage already, and two ships in the harbour cannot be unloaded. A sub-committee of . the Stevedoring Industry Commission was to have left for New Zealand shortly to study cargo handling conditions there, but the trip will not be made until the dispute is ended. The cargo awaiting shipment or in the holds amounts to 72,000 tons, including over 10,000 tons awaiting shipment to New Zealand. Wool buyers to-day decided to attend the Brisbane sale next week, but will not do so if the industrial trouble extends to Queensland. In the meantime the good, record of the coal-mining industry during the past few weeks is threatened by tlic decision of the miners at 10 large northern coal mines to stop work on Monday unless disputes are settled.
