MILK BOARD’S LEVY

RATE OF *D A GALLON A levy of id a gallon on all milk sold in the board's district for the period ending March 31 next was imposed by the Dunedin Metropolitan Milk Board at a meeting yesterday afternoon. All persons selling milk in the district, including producer vendors, will be subject to the levy. Present at the meeting were Messrs L. J. Ireland, R, F. Barr, McCartney, Williamson, J. H. Hinton, T. McD, Foster, and Dr G. 0. L. Dempster. ■ Sixteen applications were received for the position of secretary-treasurer to the board, and these were referred to a sub-committee to consider and report back with three names for the full board’s consideration. The Director of the Milk Marketing Division advised that a recommendation was being submitted to the Central Milk Board for the payment to the Dunedin Board of a sum equivalent to the levy for the period from April 1. 1946, to the date the levy was actually, struck. The Director also advised that the rezoning of the board’s area for deliveries would receive attention at an earlv date. The completion of the 1947 agreement with producers was now being hastened, advised the Marketing Division. The secretary (Mr R. 0. Johnstone) advised that the matter had been set down for discussion at a recent meeting of the National Town Milk Producers’ Federation m Wellington, but he had received no advice of the decisions reached. The method by which vendors pay the levy of Jd was explained to the meeting by the secretary. Vendors who purchased supplies through recognised producer associations recovered their levy through the Central Milk Council in an increased margin. Producer vendors, however, must ipay the levy direct to tho Milk Board. If producer vendors found tlia'fc tlio tot&l of producer price, plus the margin for the services given, and the levy was more than the consumer price, they had the right to join a producer association. They would then sell their milk to that association at a town milk producer price, and recover from the. Milk Marketing Division their margins as vendors, including the milk levy. It was decided to approach tho City Council to make arrangements for the City Corporation’s inspectors to carry but the board’s inspection work.
