WOMEN’S GOLF

NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 17. Excellent conditions favoured. the opening at Shirley to-day of the New Zealand Women’s Golf Championship. Although many contestants had not played competitive golf for several years, the standard during the day was remarkably high and in recording 77 to win the Foursomes championships, Miss C. Smith (Invercargill) and Miss Z Hudson (Christchurch) returned, an excellent score. In the other major event decided during the day the North Island had the most comfortable of wins over the South Island in the annual teams’ match, Miss H. Buchanan (Christchurch) achieving the South’s solitary success. The course was in excellent order, but many players fell into the error of attempting to pitch to the pin, a fault that has been noticeable in golf locally in the last week or two. There were several fine contests in the interisland game and the scoring in the Foursomes Championship was satisfactory. Misses Hudson and Smith put up a fine performance in winning the Foursomes Championship. They were out in 39 in spite of seven at the'fifth and were back in 38. Miss Smith was sound with her woods and Miss Hudson played her irons well throughout the round. The putting of both players was sound, although on several occasions putts for birdies stayed on the Hip of the cup. The runners-up, Misses Horwell and Fleming, both putted well and played soundly from tee to green. They had to take a penalty at the seventeenth, however, after Miss Horwell had driven into the creek and this probably cost them the title. NORTH WELL AHEAD. The interisland match was a rather one-sided affair, although many of . the individual contests were dose and produced good golf. Mrs G. W. Hollis played sound golf to beat Miss J. Horwell in the first match. She was out in 38 to lead three up at the turn and her golf throughot was cool and cap-

able. She was especially sound on the greens where Miss Horwell, although putting reasonably well, could not hold her. The Timaru player brought her deficit back to one going to the sixteenth, but Mrs Hollis won the hole to be dormie 2 and the next was halved. Miss Hudson had a great battle with Mrs P. Glanville (Te Awamutu), which did not end until the last green. Miss R. Hodges (Auckland) began badly against (Mrs H. A. Penn, of Russley, who was in front at the turn 1 up. Mrs Penn won the tenth in par figures, and the next was halved, but over the remainder of the round Miss Hodges played extremely good golf, coming in m par figures to win comfortably. At the start of the match she frequently hooked her drives, but once settled she showed herself to be a competent golfer, with a particularly effective putter. - LEADING SCORERS.
