RETIREMENT OF PROFESSOR S. F. HUNTER

After being principal of Theological Hall, Knox College, for four years, Prefessor S. F. Hunter has announced his retirement. The real contribution to theological education made by Professor Hunter was stressed yesterday at a function at the college, and the opportunity was also taken to farewell Mr <3. W. Johnstone, lecturer in voice production and expression, who has also announced his retirement. Because of illness Mr Johnstone was unable to be present, and in apprecia-

tion, of his services a monetary gift from a fund subscribed by past and present students of Knox College in recognition of her father’s work was presented on his behalf. to his daughter, Miss Margaret Johnstone. A similar presentation was made to Professor Hunter.

A minute eulogising Professor Hunter’s services, to be presented to the General Assembly, was read by the Rev. R. S. Watson. Professor Hunter had been professor of Old Testament studies since 1928 and principal of the Theological Hall since Dr Dickie's death in 1942, Mr Watson

said, and he was also the first dean of the faculty of theology at Otago University. On behalf of the students he presented' the professor with a monetary gift. Other speakers were Professor J. A. Allan, the Rev. Dr J. D. Salmond, Mr G. L. Lynds, president of the Theological Hall Students’ Union, the Rev. W. G. Slade, president of the Otago branch of the National Council of' Churches, and the Rev. Dr John Henderson.

In replying. Professor Hunter said that he had derived great satisfaction from_ the services he had been able to give, and returned thanks for the speakers’ generous tributes.
