RESIGNATION FROM UPPER HOUSE

CANDIDATE FOR RICCARTON SEAT

(Special.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 17. The resignation of the. Hon. A. McLagan from the Legislative Council is expected shortly, so that he may qualifv for nomination, as tho ixovorU'* ment candidate for Riccarton. Mr McLagan was appointed to the Council and made a member of the executive without portfolio in June, 1942 tho Government thus securing his administrative help in the most effective utilisation of industrial man power during the war. It was an open secret that Mr McLagan was extremely reluctant to become a Legislative Councillor, but he took the position and became leader of that branch of the Legislature. Although inexperienced in that capacity, he showed complete competence The task was easier than presiding over the larger and more controversial conference of the New Zealand Federation of Labour. Mr (McLagan was appointed Munster of National Service in October, 1942, and he resigned from the presidency of the Federation of Labour last April, when- it was announced »he would undertake administrative control of the portfolio of Employment held by the Prime Minister. Although ceasing to bo a member of the Legislative Couni cil, Mr McLagan will continue to hold . i his position as a member of the Execu- ■ tive Council.
