PARLIAMENT

YESTERDAY'S BUSINESS (Special.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 12 An announcement by the PostmasterGeneral, Mr Webb, that he would not be a candidate at the General Election was yesterday’s sensation in the House. Coming as it did during the discussion of Ministerial replies to questions, the announcement was sprung on a House which was not expecting anything so interesting. It was only the second time Mr Webb has spoken this session, the previous occasion being a tribute to the late (Mr H. Atmore. After disposing during the afternoon of a total of 28 Ministerial replies printed on two Supplementary Order Papers, the House. turned to legislation in the evening, when three Bills were discussed. They were the Trustee Amendment Bill, the Justices of the Peace Amendment Bill, and the Servicemen’s Settlement and Land Sales Amendment Bill. Discussion on the last-named was still in progress when the House adjourned, Opposition members being critical of the stabilising of land prices at the level of December, 1942. The Prime Minister indicated at the adjournment that the House would con-’ tinue with the three Bills to-day, theu proceeding to discussion on the first item of the Estimates. The Legislative Council, after brief formal business, paid tributes to the services of the late Hon. F. J. Rolleston, and after passing the customary motion adjourned as. a mark of respect until to-day.
