PIRACY AND VIOLENCE
TROUBLE IN THE CELEBES VILLAGES RAIDED BY ARMED GANGS LONDON, September 11.' Piracy off the Celebes developed with a wave of violence on the islands, according to the Netherlands News Agency. Armed gangs manning sailing craft raided fishing villages on small islands in the South Celebes. A Dutch civil affairs officer and a police inspector were murdered at Macassar, and seve-> ral Chinese in the interior. Cinemas, weaving mills, and warehouses have been set on fire. Dr Van Mook decreed the outlawing of the Indonesian National Party in the South Celebes as a danger to public order. The Government charges' the party with using violence and intimidation to force 80,000 natives to join the Republicans, and states that the party, was responsible for an attack by 1,000 men against the Papany police barracks and burning £70,000 worth of goods and property at the Ankadjene textile factory. _ The Government also alleges, that anti-Dutch activity has iucrased in the Celebes.
An Indonesian spokesman said that while the Government was unlikely to protest officially against the ban, it would probably hinder the efforts to arrange a political solution in ‘the Indies.
