ROAD FATALITY
CHARGE AGAINST SOLDIER negligent driving alleged Arising out of the fatality on the Main South road in the vicinity of Henley yesterday morning, when a motor car careered into a group of workmen engaged in clearing a channel alongside the road, Russell Vincent Gibson, a soldier, aged 23, was charged in the Police Court this morning with negligently driving a m'otor Car, thereby causing the death of Hector Bertram Patrick, a labourer, aged 27, of Allanton. Applying for bail, Mr J."!?. Ward, who represented the accused, said that whatever other issues were involved in the matter the question of liquor as far as Gibson was concerned did not enter into it. Counsel added that the accused was a resident of Dunedin and that his father was in a responsible Government position.
A remand was granted until next Wednesday by Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M., on the application of Seniorsergeant D. Vaughan. Bail of £IOO, with a surety of the same amount, was allowed Gibson, who was .ordered to report daily to the police and was directed’ not to drive a motor vehicle in the meantime.
