DUNEDIN ORPHANS’ CLUB

“ RAIDED " BY TIMARU SAVAGES The Dunedin Orphans’ Club was, on' Saturday night, subjected to a “ raid ” by 45 members of the South Canterbury Savage Club at the former’s rooms, but after a somewhat alarming entrance, heralded by trumpet calls and headed by a “savage” brandishing an axe, and the performance of a warlike haka, the invaders settled down to a peaceful occupation of the premises and treated the local orphans to a remarkably pleasing entertainment, comprising such varied items as xylophone solos, , a demonstration of magic, ’cello solos, a humorous sketch, songs with banjo accompaniment, numbers by a pierrot quartet, some _ highly amusing lightning sketching, trombone solos, and what might be called, for purposes of distinction, ordinary vocal solos. . Every item was thorbughly enjoyed, and in order to further demonstrate the spirit of co-operation, the (Orphans’ Club Orchestra gave its services willingly and joyously. When the savages made their appearance the Orphans’ Club president, Bro. E R, Harty, was in the chair, and he extended to the visitors, a typical Harty welcome, which tactful gesture probably accounted for the changing of the atmosphere of threatened hostility to one of campfire brotherhood. Bro. Harty invested Great Chief Savage J. J. Conroy with the. insignia of presiding officer, enabling the latter to conduct proceedings for the rest of the evening. Among those present at tile Korero were the president of the Association of Kindred Clubs (Bro. E. L. Watkins), ex-president of the association (Bro. Dr Adams, of Wanganui), the president of the Christchurch Savage Club (Bro J. Lorimer), ex-president of the Christchurch Club (Bro. J. McLaughlin), and the secretary of the Association of Kindred Clubs (Bro. A. li. Loach) There were several other visitors from various parts of the Dominion. i

Bro Harty announced that the Orphans' Club would hold a Scottish night on September 10 and a ladies’ night on September. 24. , The Orphans’ Club entertained the visiting savages in a motor run around the Peninsula yesterday.
