UNUSUAL DESIGNS
PRE-VIEW OF NEW FABRICS "$ ~ Exquisite fabrics patterned with somo of tho most revolutionary designs ever seen in New Zealand .were shown at a preview in Wellington of samples of nylons, wools, and rayons at present being manufactured in England. The designs, which have been drawn by famous artists, are printed on to the fabrics by a secret process known to England only. Nylons, which are practically uncrushablc, and do nob need to be ironed after washing, are imprinted with motifs that range from a semi-conven-tional series of shorthand symbols to brilliant bursts of colour resembling exploding skyrockets. One pattern on a square scarf of rayon depicts a street scene in London, while another shows a bespectacled woman carrying an open umbrella and leading by the hand ■air obviously reluctant child. There are adaptations of Paisley designs, patriotic motifs, line drawings, exotic tropical blooms, kilted Scotsmen and, finally, a large silk square designed by the film star James Mason, featuring caricatures of stage and screen star's. The tenor of the new design is colour brilliance, and unconventiality, and they offer a complete change from the products and designs produced since the outbreak of the war. There is no indication, however, as to when these fabrics will reach the New Zealand markets.
