ATTEMPT TO BLOW UP BRITISH DESTROYER PALESTINIAN NAVAL RATINGS ARRESTED LONDON, May 2. An attempt to blow up the British destroyer Chevron in Haifa Harbour was foiled by the discovery of a kitbag filled with explosives in the destroyer’s mess room, says Reuter’s Jerusalem correspondent. The Chevron arrived at Haifa from Alexandria yesterday carrying 13 Palestine naval ratings due for discharge in Palestine. After the ratings had disembarked the kitbag was discovered placed in position over the ship’s magazine and containing detonators fitted and fully primed, also a length of fuse. The ratings were arrested. One had a detonator, and others had explosives concealed in their clothing. One of the ratings, it is reported, has been identified as a well-known terrorist. The Chevron was the destroyer which intercepted an illegal merchant vessel inside territorial waters off Tel-Aviv on March 25.
