POWER CUTS
TIME LOST IN FACTORIES WAGE REDUCTIONS POSSIBLE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, April 26. A reduction in Auckland factory workers' wages through the electric power cuts was stated to be a possibility, when a delegation of Auckland business men discussed the situation with the Prime Minister and three of his colleagues. Mr Truscott, president of the Auckland Manufacturers' Association, told the Ministers that domestic services took 52 per cent, of Auckland's power and hot water services 32 per cent, of this total. One manufacturer paid £278 in wages for factory time lost through the power cuts, but he could assure the Government that 700 manufacturers and business men would say that if cuts continued in factory time: "We cannot pay." He advocated a strong publicity campaign by the Power Board with the slogan: " More power in the home—less pay in the envelope." Mr Fraser commented that reduced production was a serious factor but, regarding the wages threat, he reminded the delegation of free permanent waves and other attractions offered to obtain factory workers.
