UNION VIEWS UNKNOWN
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, April 16. " There is some doubt whether the watersiders will work on Saturday, and I assume that our staff will not be needed if the waterside workers take it into their minds not to handle cargoes," said Mr G. E. Carr at a meeting of the Auckland Harbour Board to-day. He was commenting on a report by the chairman, Mr J. H. Frater, that, in view of the congestion of the port, no extended leave could be given to the staff over Easter, and that it would be necessary for normal arrangements to be made for I Saturday. j Mr Frater said he hoped the situa- ! tion would not arise. If the waterfront was working on Saturday, the' staff would be needed to assist, but its members would not be held back if there was no work. The attitude of the Auckland branch of the Waterside Workers' Union to working on Saturday morning under the Easter holiday direction laid down by the Waterfront Control Commission in Wellington is a matter of lively speculation among those interested in the port. The union has not yet stated its views on Easter holiday work, but it is understood that the subject is being discussed in Wellington.
