Irish Fighter and Concrete were slow to move, and Tuapeka was first to show out, but quickly gave way to Venturesome, who ,was followed to the turn by Robot, Antibes, Frances, and Scotty McCabe. The order was unchanged into the straight, where Scotty McCabe put in a good run to win by three lengths from Antibes, with Regatta finishing on into third place. Robot, Venturesome, and Frances were next. Back-marker Wins. Emondale (175H82) and Sandy's Comet (125-142) were the strongest supported in the Waitaki Trot, with Avowal (95-77) next in favour on the win machine.
From a good start Kerwood Bingen, Special Effort, and Roma Grattan were the first to Gettle down, and they showed the way through the straight. Going down the back Avowal went into the lead and was followed around the turn by Special Effort, Lodestone (dropping back), Tungsten Steel, and Kerwood Bingen. Once in line for home Peter Dale challenged from the rear and finally won going away from Avowal and Special Effort, with Emondale two lengths away, followed by Kerwood (Bingen.
High-weight Handicap. i Sir Bernard (508-486) and Pencarrow (390-486) were made favourites, with Putechan (306-340) next in favour, but the trio failed to get a place. Grand Coulee was slow away. Powys was first to show out and took up the role of pace-maker. He was followed down the back by Bali. Lord Roland, and Burberry. Lord Roland improved his position to ibe second at the far turn, and Burberry also moved up to take the lead at the straight entrance, followed by Lord (Roland, Lost Art, and Turnstile. Burberry was never threatened in the run home, and in a good battle for the minor placings Lost Art ju6t beat Lord Roland, with Bali only a head away fourth, closely followed by Turnstile.
Eastern Coin at Long Odds. The Cup was a good betting race, Tring (389-460) being favourite when the machine closed. Boolamskee (344376), Sphere (313-333). and Foxchase (294-342) were next in demand. Kiloney and (Ruling Moment led The Raker out of the straight, but once into the back Ruling Moment drew away to a three-length lead from Kiloney, The Raker, and Forage, with Honest Sal and Boolamskee doing best of the remainder. Boolamskee began a forward move going round the far turn to be handy to Kiloney and Ruling Moment when the straight was reached. Eastern Coin then put in an appearance and after a punishing finish with Boolamskee got the verdict by half a head. Kiloney hung on for third, followed by Honest Sal, Ruling Moment, and Foxchase. Good Finish. Siegform (638-421) was made a strong favourite for the Hakataramea Hack Handicap, but failed by half a head to catch Legal Right (451-335), the second choice. Legal Right led out from Miss Quickly, Plutocrat, and Lalla Meer, with Brockie, who began slowly, bringing up the rear. At the far turn Plutocrat had moved up to be behind Legal Right and Siegform was making up ground. Legal Right was still clear turning for home but had to be hard ridden over the latter stages to hold off a strong challenge from Siegform, who finished wide out on the track. Lalla Meer was staying on in third place ahead of Brockie, who finished fast. Second Trot. The bracket Avowal and Palm Beach (274J-235J) was made favourite, with Emondale (170-168 J) next in order of favouritism.
Kerwood Bingen, Lochdorine, and Dillon View began best, but going out of the straight gave way to Emondale and Palm Beach. Wee Logan fell after going three furlongs. Going down the back Emondale opened up a threelength lead from Palm Bearer. Kerwood Bingen, Scottish Star, and Lochdornie. Going round c the far turn Emondale slightly increased his lead from Single Choice, who had improved his position, and Courtly was moving up. The order was unchanged into the straight and Emondale actually won but galloped past the post and lost the race on a protest. Kerwood Bingen was placed first, and Emondale second, followed by Single Choice and Lochdornia. Strong Favourite Beaten. Leigh Barton (603-255) was made a strong favourite for the sprint, but had no chance with the winner, Whitley (182-151) who was second choice. Whitley made a good beginning to win from end to end. He was followed down the back by Royoney and Powys, with the remainder of the field handy. Whitley was two lengths clear of Lieeb Barton across the top, with Powys and Royoney following. Leigh Barton threw out a strong challenge in tho straight but could make no impression on the winner. Justitia stayed on for third, ahead of Powys. Boloyna tailed the field throughout. Easy Win In the concluding event Petty Cash (376-289) and Legal Label (347-244) attracted most attention in the betting. Legal Label was first out and made a one-horse race of it. Te-Muka and Petty Cash, after being slow away, were last early in the running. The winner opened up a six-length lead going down the back from Runaway and Money Bird, together, and they were followed by Velvet Slipper and Air Lord. The. order was unchanged into the straight, where Petty Cash and Te-Muka came fast from the back. In a stirring finish for the minor places half heads separated Air Lord, Petty Cash, and Te-Muka.
