LATE EASTER

HOLIDAY IN WINTER SEASON The movable nature of Easter brings it this year to within four days of the latest date on which it may fall. As a result the holiday, which is the ouly considerable brealk for many workers other than the Christmas and New Year holidays, will be observed after the weather has normally changed to wintry temperatures. Easter may fall as early as March 22 or as late as April 25. It actually fell on the latter date in 1943, but it will not again occur as late as April 21, as it does this year, until 1957. Easter Day was last observed on March 22, in 1818, and it wUI not occur as early this century. For some hundreds of years there have been sporadic agitations for calendar reform which would definitely fix the dates of Easter and other movable feasts. It is understood that the chuches have no objection to the fixing of Easter according to the calendar instead of according to the phases of the moon. The late arrival of Easter this year results in it coming into close proximity with other holidays. St. George's Day will coincide with Easter Tuesday and Anzac Day falls on the following, Thursday. The dates of Easter Day for the nest four years are as follows: 1947, April 6. 1948, March 28. 1949, April 17. 1930. April 9 The lateness of Easter this year unduly protracts the bowling season. Most city clubs close a week after Eastev, and they will accordingly remain open until April 27.
