STEEL EXPORTS

BRITAIN LEADS THE WORLD LONDON, April 14. Britain is now the largest steel exporter in the world, outstripping even the United States, and production this year promises to establish a record in the history of the industry. Production at the end of the first quarter was at the rate of more than 13,000,000 tons a year, compared with more than 10,000,000 in 1938. More than 50 countries throughout the world have placed big orders for British steel, Belgium, Holland, France, and Denmark requesting urgent supplies of many thousands of tons for the rehabilitation of their countries. Britain in the first quarter of 1946 sold more than £18,000,000 worth of steel abroad, representing an increase of 18 per cent, in tonnage, and 75 per cent in value over exports during the comparable period of 1938.
