KANNA ARRIVING SOON The Union Steam Ship Company'* new motor coaster Kanna is at present on her maiden run,from England to New Zealand and will make Dunediu her first New Zealand port. She is due on April 23 and after discharging portion of her cargo here will continue to Lyttelton and Wellington. This vessel was originally ordered by the Admiralty lor service as a supply ship with the South-east Asia Command, but was purchased daring construction by the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand Ltd., and altered to suit the requirements of the New Zealand coastal trade. She ia from the berth on which were built the famous New Zealand corvettes Moa and Kiwi, at the yards of Messrs Henry Robb Ltd., Leith, Scotland. Of the shelter-deck type, with machinery aft and bridgehouse amidships, Kanna has two holds, each with 'tweendecks. Three sets of gear operated by electric winches, have been provided for the rapid handling of cargo. The principal particulars are as follows:—Length, 210 ft; gross tonnage, 970; net tonnage, 370; dead weight at loaded draught, 1,260 tons; total cargo capacity, 85,200 cubic feet. The propelling machinery comprises a 5-cylinder Harland B. and W. Diesel engine driving a single screw. The service speed is 10.5 knots. Kanna was launched by Lady Freyberg on October 23, and was delivered to the company on February 6. From Leith, the vessel proceeded to Middlesborough, where cargo was loaded for Dunedin, Lyttelton, and Wellington, and the outward voyage was commenced on February 17. Calls were made at Port Said, Colombo, and Fremantle for bunkers and stores, and the vessel sailed on April 10 from Fremantle for Dunedin, Lyttelton, and Wellington. A sister ship, the Katui, has recently been delivered to the Union Company from Itobb's yards, and is at present loading in the United Kingdom for Wellington. It is anticipated that a third vessel, the Kaimanawa, which was delivered to the Union Company from Ttobb's yard in June, 1944. and has since been operating in European waters under requisition by the Ministry of War Transport, will be released for fitting out for the voyage to New Zealand. . . Captain E. M. Anderson is in command of Kanna. and his chief engineer is Mr N. W. Macfarlane.
