The salaries of Commoners should b® increased to £I,OOO a year, of which £SOO should be allowed to all member* as an expense allowance free from income tax, states a report by the Select Committee on members’ expenses. published as a White Paper. The committee also recommends that Ministers with salaries under £5.000, and the chairman and deputy-chair-man of the Ways and Means Committee should be granted an expense allowance of £SOO free of income tax. as in the case of members of the House in addition to their present salaries. Commoners at present are paid a salary of £6OO a year, of which £IOO is tax free as expenses.
