On Thursday evening the city will officially bid farewell to the retiring Governor-General (Sir Cyril Newall) and Lady Newall, at a function to be held in the main Town Hall. Associated with the Mayor (Mr D. C. Cameron) at this function will be the Very Rev. D. C. Herron, Chancellor of the University of Otago. During the evening their Excellencies will receive a presentation from the city, and a musical programme will be presented by leading Dunedin performers. The hand of the First Battalion, the Otago Regiment.. will.be in attendance. In his capacity of Dominion Chief Scout, the Governor-General will be accorded a -guard of honour by Dunedin Scouts and Girl Guides at the entrance to tho hall. Girl Guides will make a presentation of a bouquet to Lady Newall, and a picked team of Scouts will give the traditional haka.

A decision to accept the tender of Metropolitan Vickers Electrical Company for the delivery of 49 unassembled and one assembled trolly buses at a cost of £173,417 sterling was reached at a meeting of the Auckland Transport Board yesterday after a discussion in committee. Seven tenders, six from British firms and one from an American company, were received for the buses, which aVe to replace the tramway system in Auckland. Delivery by the successful company is scheduled in 22 months’ time, hut it is possible that the buses may arrive before then.

During last Wednesday’s power cut, candles lent an old-world atmosphere to the bar-room of a city hotel, says the ‘ Auckland Star.’ A ,happy party was fascinated by the way a solitary candle on the back shelf defied concerted efforts to blow if out. The draft for Otago and Southland will arrive by the express at 5.1 p.m., and the 31 men. whose destinations are south of Mosgiel will he conveyed to their homes by road transport. There arc also 25 for Dunedin and two for Central Otago.
