*■ Of all the planls that grow,” writes Professor Thorold Rogers in ‘ Science Notes,’ “ the tobacco plant has probably been the source of more happiness than any other. To quote Kingsley, ‘ There’s no herb like it under the canopy of heaven.’ Sometimes it proves highly injurious, it is true. When it does there’s a reason for it. Smokers are notoriously careless. A man gets used to a certain brand and continues to smoke it by the mere force of habit. If it is pure it won’t harm him.'' If it is overloaded with the deadly poison known as nicotine, it may kill him sooner or later. The difficulty is to ensure its purity. They have solved this problem in New Zealand, I understand. The tobacco produced in that favoured land is toasted. That effectually rids it of most of its nicotine, leaving it quite harmless. A wonderful country!” The professor refers to the five brands so popular with New Zealanders—Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullshead), Cavendish, Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog), Riverhend Gold, Descri Gold, and .tailormadcs. AJI toasted, and no sore throat, no cough!—;[Advt,]
