DOUBLE TRAGEDY

FATHER AND SON DROWNED (P.A.) GREYMOUTH, March 18. Mr George Mangos, aged 30, and his son Kevin, aged seven, were both drowned in the Pororari River near Punakaiki at 2.30 this afternoon. Mr Mangos, accompanied by his son and two nephews, was fishing when his son slipped into the river. He struggled, but went under. The father jumped in, caught the boy, and got near the bank. He clutched at a rock, but appeared to be exhausted, and fell back into the river. The nephews ran to the nearest house for help, which came immediately. Both bodies, however, were found at the bottom of the river. When they were recovered the boy was dead. Artificial respiration was applied to the father for some time, but was unsuccessful. The bodies were taken to Westport this evening. Mr Mangos was a driver for Gibbs Motor Service, and was well, known in the district. He was a native of Lyell, and leaves a wife and two young children.
