\ BENBEGULA A POPULAR PICK DOUBLE CROSS IN SPRINT (Special.) CHRISTCHURCH, March 1. The Banks Peninsula Racing Club will hold its autumn meeting on its own course at Motukarara to-morrow. The fields are well filled, adn include several horses due to race at the Wellington meeting next week. Horses with two engagements include Whackie, Derene, Falconbridge. and Rampage. Whackie and Derene are to start in the Peninsula Handicap. Falconbridge will probably contest both his engagements, and Rampage is to start in the Ahuriri Hack Handicap. The track promises to he in fast order, and under the win and place system the following ara likely to be well supported:— Bradley Stakes. Wide Range, Wane, Deficiency. Terawera High-weight. The trial grass was open, but the bulk of the work was done on the plough. " Al-Sirat broke away from Bridge Acre commencing a half-mile sprint, but the latter was in front after two furlongs had been • covered. She beat her relative home comfortably in 53 3-5, the last three in 39. Al-Sirat's display was not very encouraging, but he may do better with the colours up. Double Cross strode over seven furlongs in 1.35, the last three in 38 3-5, and Fearless ran the last half-mile of similar work in 51 2-5. Thornbridge, due to race at Trentham, covered six furlongs in 1.20, the last three in 40. Avonbridge attracted notice by covering six furlongs in 1.15 3-5, the second three in 38 3-5. Racket and Denary finished abreast at the end of the same journey in 1.16,

each three in 38. The former is more solid in condition than ever previously, and will be a strong candidate in the big race. Palfrey was finishing on in front of Belle Leonne and Lady Welbeck at the end of seven furlongs in 1.31 3-5, the last three in 38 2-5. • Wide Range sprinted five furlongs in 1.3 2-5, the last three in 38 3-5. He will probably be favourite in to-mor-row's maiden event. Irish Note was let off with a halfmile sprint in 50. Peculate was a length in front of Lord Elgin after covering a mile in 1.44 2-5, the first half in 51 4-5. Peculate will be in strong demand in the high-weight event, in which she will be ridden by her trainer, G. Ridgway. Poxhaven, Authentic, and Swing Along were restricted to a working gallop over six furlongs in 1.24. Gunga Din covered a mile in 1.46 2-5, the second half in 51 2-5. Falconbridge and Whackie were companions over seven furlongs in 1.35, the last three in 38. Warfield accounted for Air Lad andRampage over the final stages of hall' a mile in 50. 2-5, the last three in 37. On the grass Benbecula was kept in restraint in some useful work over a mile without being sent against the watch. _ Regal Lily and Penetrate, by Revelation—Siega, ran half a mile in_49.
