TRANSIT HOUSING

A GOOD STEP FORWARD AVAILABILITY OF TOMAHAWK CAMP In an interview to-day Cr W. B. Taverner, chairman, City Finance Committee, stated that, following the decision of council to confer with the R.S.A. on the above question, he had, in company with the town clerk and two members of the R.S.A. executive, made a preliminary inspection of the camp at Tomahawk on' Wednesday afternoon. , He stated that this camp had been occupied by the Dutch evacuees and had been vacated by them the previous day. The camp was found to be in excellent order and fully equipped, but it was understood that the equipment and furniture had been purchased by the Dutch authorities, and it would be necessary to arrange with them should the camp be used as proposed. He stated the next step, which' was taken immediately, was to make contact with the Commissioner of Works in Wellington, and that was done by telephone. The Wellington office stated that detailed particulars of the terms and conditions upon which the camp could be made available to ■ the City Council would be forwarded by an early mail. Mr Taverner said that he had communicated this information to the executive of the R.S.A., and intimated that immediately the details arrived from Wellington he would call a meeting of the Finance Committee and the (R.S.A. executive. Any decision reached at that meeting would require the confirmation of council.
