STOP PRESS

BATTLE AGAINST FLAMES. In one of the most inaccessible parts of the Waitakere area a team of 40 men are battling on a mile front against a scrub L'aae which constitutes a threat to the Huia dam watershed, one of the sources of Auckland's water supply. Provided the wind does not rise, it is expected that the fire will be stopped before it reaches the catchment area, but a strong oft-sea wind would make it virtually impossible to bring the fire under control before serious damage is done. Rain continues to be as far awny as ever, and the city's water position becomes more serious daily, despite appeals to all consumers to reduce consumption. Auckland Press Association.
