JAPANESE SILK

SMALL QUANTITY FOR AUSTRALIA ..CANBERRA, February 27. A small quantity of Japanese silk would be available for Australia this year, according to the Federal Prime Minister, Mr J. B. Chifiey. A quantity amounting to 520 tons, or 0.3 per cent of the silk available to the Far Eastern Commision, had been allotted to Australia. Negotiations were proceeding to obtain more silk and find a means of paying for the amount allowed. Australia had been asked to send wheat in exchange for the silk, but had -refused because wheat was more urgently needed elsewhere. Australia would! be willing to trade her surplus of wool and other items not needed in the Empire. •. .
