MAKING PARTY CAPITAL
CHARGES AGAINST CONSERVATIVES LONDON, Feb. 12. " The Conservative Press is trying to make party capital out of the world food situation," said Mr Herbert Morrison, in a speech at Peckham. " The assessment of world food stocks has undoubtedly given a ehock to British housewives, but it is not just a British difficulty. We no longer have leaselend and can no longer look at empty, larder shelves and say our sacrifice is helping to win the war, but we can say and we will 6ay that if we meet the present world crisis with the same toughness and determination that we met trouble during the war we shall be doing what we can to keep the peace, which largely depends on the world getting something to eat." He was confident that British people would refuse to panic and would wait until the debate in the House of Commons next Thursday. He suggested that the situation should be a good opportunity for the Conservatives to join in finding practical ways of helping. Instead they seized 'it to try and blame and discredit the Labour Government and to conceal the real, serious world national issues behind a fog of cheap party spite.
