SOUTH OTAGO NOTES

(Own Correspondent.) Personal.—He v. F. J. Ferry, L.TH., who has been vicar at Balclutha for the past three and a-balf years, has been compelled to resign owing to illhealth, the resignation taking effect on April 30. There was a large attendance of Masons at Milton on Thursday night, when Bro. J. B. Gray was installed as W.M. of Lodge St. John. ' Visitors were present from Kaitangata, Balclutha, Gore, and Dunedin, and the installation and investiture of officers was carried out by It. W. Bro. R. C. Torrance, P.G.M., assisted by Grand Lodge officers. A banquet was held at the conclusion of the ceremony. Welcome Home. —Despite the inconvenient hour of arrival of the special troop train on Sunday morning there were goodly crowds at Milton and Balclutha stations to meet the Orion draft of returned soldiers. At Milton the Pipe and Brass Bands were present, and the men were welcomed by the mayor and mayoress (Mr and Mrs C. Keinan) and Mr J. W. Keogh, for the R.S.A. At Balclutha the Brass Band was in attendance, and short speeches of welcome were made by the mayor (Mr J. T. Walter), Messrs M. Campbell (Welcome Home Committee), and (B. Chalmers (R.S.A.).

Football Function.—There was a large attendance at a welcome home function tendered Clutha Football Club members in the club room on Saturday night. Mr Athol Miller presided, and a very enjoyable evening was spent with toasts and musical items. There were 12 returned members as guests of honour, and apologies were received from six others. The men were accorded a % r ery hearty welcome by the president and others. During the course of the function opportunity was taken to make a presentation to Mr Vic Stephens on the occasion of his approaching marriage. P. and T. (Reunion.—The South Otago sub-section of the P. and T. Association held its annual reunion in the Mon Desir Tea Gardens on Saturday night. There were about 60 present, including visitors from Dunedin, Milton, Owaka, and Kaitangata. Also present was Mr D. Palmer, vicepresident of the New Zealand association, and he gave a most interesting talk on the affairs of the association generally. Mr H. Reeves (chairman of the sub-centre V presided, and he and Mr H. Wiggins (postmaster) thanked Mr Palmer '■ for his address. In reply, Mr Palmer paid a tribute to the work of the local secretary (Mr E. H. Scherp). At the conclusion of the business part of the evening, supper was served and a dance followed, this being interspersed with musical items. The music for the dancing was provided by the Dunedin P. and T. Workshops Orchestra, which accompanied the Dunedin party. Mr C. McLay, president of the Dunedin branch, was also present, and gave a short address on confernece matters.

Fire Brigades' Competitions.—Milton Fire Brigade held their annual local competitions on ■ Saturday afternoon, when some excellent work was seen. The shield for aggregate points was won by Foreman A. Hansen, who :put up an excellent performance during the afternoon. Results:—One Man Dressing (Keen Cup): T. Hansen 68sec 1, A. Hansen 72 2-ssec 2, G. Read 74 2-ssec ' (2sec penalty), 76 2-ssec, 3. Magee and W. Carruthers. Tennis.—Balclutha 11. had a big win over Lovell's Flat on the Balclutha courts. The home team won by 14

sets (119 games) to 2 sets (59 games). Owing to the rain in the morning the match between Milton and Balclutha 1., to have been played at Milton, was postponed Bowling.— Milton and Balclutha Clubs met on the Balclutha green, which was heavy after heavy rain in the morning. The result was a win for Milton by 6 points. Scores (Milton skips first): —A. Vidal 9, J. Montgomerie 23; T. Clayton 20, L. Moffat 25; A. Wethey 27, R. Hutton 15; J. Campbell 12, L. Edwards 27; J. Scores (Kaitangata skips first):—P. Prescott 25, James 11; J. Haig 25, E. Wilson 18; W. Neill 5, C. Alloo 34. Kaitangata 55, Owaka 63. Stirling defeated Clinton by 22 points in a three-rink game. Scores (Clinton skips first): —Powley 22, R. Cessford 15; T. Livingstone 9, T. Duncan 36; C. North 20, 11. Anderson 22. Clinton 51, Stirling 73. There will be no interclub fixtures this week-end, when Stirling Club will "hold a pairs tournament. Should there be sufficient entries, Stirling and Balclutha greens will be used. Entries for the South Otago open fours tournament to be held on the 23rd inst. close on Saturday, Feruary 16. Present indications, are for a big entry, several Dunedin teams taking part, as well as some from Southland. Cricket. —Milton B defeated Milton A in an Association fixture on Saturday. The B team made 114 (C. Maguire 48). The only other doublefigure score was that of " extras," which accounted for 19. Best bowlers for the A team were R. Davis (four for 34) and A. Rekowski (two for 9). The A team made 58 (J. Hensen 27 not out). Bowling for the B's, A. Mudie took six for 14 and E. Currie two for 14. At Clinton the home team defeated Milburn by 31 runs. Milburn made 57 (J. Kane 13, J. Gray 12). Bowling for Clinton, A. Tabor took two for 13, Murdoch two for 20, Darnell three for 14. Clinton replied with 88 (Nelson 24, Rosevear 18 not out, Roy 13). Bowling for Milburn, L. Milne took two for 8, F. Bowie two for 17, J. Gray two for 27. At Kaitangata, Owaka defeated the home team by 58 runs. Kaitangata made 59 (E. McNutt 30, A. Alloo 25). Garvin, who took six wickets for 45 runs, was Kaitangata's most successful bowler. Owaka made 117 (Garvin 14 and Stanway 13). Owaka's bowlers were H. Brownlie (five for 20), Alloo (two for 5), and McNutt (two for 17). The League match, Football v. Benbar, played at Balclutha, provided a very exciting finish, Football winning by one run. Benhar made 46,' Sharp and Keown being top scorers wifh 8 each. Bowling for Football, B. Hill took two for 8, H, Inglis two for 7, and Popitch three for 1. Football opened badly, two wickets being down for 6 runs, four for 8, five for 10, and six for 14. D. Inglis then stopped the rot, and as the tailenders held their end up, Football came out on top with 47 runs on. Inglis, who made 28, was the only doublefigure batsman in the match. Bowling for Benhar, Barron took four for 3, D. Hansen two for 3, Budge two for 10, while McGrath and Sharp each took a wicket. Next Saturday's association draw is: Milton A v. Clutha, at Balclutha; Milburn v. Milton B, at Milton; Clinton v. Owaka, at Owaka; Kaitangata, a bye. In a friendly match played at High School, Clutha defeated Waiwera. In their first innings Waiwera made only 31. Bowling for Clutha, I. Stewart took two for 0, Wright two for 3, and Dunn one for 5. Clutha replied with 70 (L. Dunn, 25, being top scorer). Bowling for Waiwera, L. Dunn to.ok six for 18, J. Falconer one for 0, and H. Anderson one for 9. In a second strike Waiwera made 143 (L. Dunn 63, H. Dunn 42 retired). Bowling for Clutha, L. Guest took three for 34, Stewart two for 17, Ramage three for 28. j Salvation Army.—Members of the Mliton S.A. Corps last week farewelled Captain L. Wilson, who has been transferred to North New Brighton, and on Thursday night welcomed the new officers, Major Blaikie and Lieut. Davis. Speeches of welcome were made by Mrs Keinan (mayoress), Mr AV. J. Cockburn, Treasurer J. H. Bateman, Bros. J. Keen and A. Allfrey, Y.P.S.M. Mrs i Allfrey, and Rev. L. T. Norwell, while the chairman, C.S.M. Bro. Jas. Anderson, also extended a welcome. Enjoyable items were interspersed between | speeches, and Major Blaikie and Lieut. Davis suitably acknowledged the welcome given.
