LACK OF OFFICER VOLUNTEERS

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, Feb. 12. Unless more officers volunteer for service with New Zealand's J Force, which is to begin training early next month, the Army will be faced with the Gilberfian situation of having units without leaders. The position to-day might be described as the Army's No. 1 headache. While about 200 officers are required for the force, only six—five patella and one Maori—have offered their services in the four areas in the northern military district, representing one-half of the North Island, and of this number only one officer is eligible. Should the required number of officers not be available when the force enters ramp, it is anticipated that there will be sufficient local instructors, supplemented bv n.c.o.s with overseas experience, to give the early training. The shortage of officer volunteers is not likely to affect the relief of the brigade group being sent from Italy to .lapan when its period of service expires. ,
