ATOMIC ENERGY

INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT PREPARATION IN BRITAIN (N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent.) (Rec. 8 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 11. Thousands of people in Britain will shortly be working on the industrial development of atomic energy. The Ministry of Supply is asking for applications from candidates to fill the chief posts, and letters must be received within seven days. The department that will supply uranium and other atomic raw materials is one of Britain's biggest factories. It is the Royal Ordnance Factory at Risley, near Warrington, in Lancashire. In addition to scientists who have specialised in atomic physics, the directorate of atomic energy is engaging many types of engineers. They include chemical engineers to design atomic batteries for Didcot in Berks, and the plant for extracting radio-active metals to be built at Risley j mechanical engineers to design steam turbines and the engines which atomic energy will drive; and civil engineers to build factory buildings, railways, roads, and pumping plants. These posts will carry salaries up to £1,300 a year. The nucleus of the administrative staff of the atomic raw materials department is already installed at Risley.
