OBITUARY
HR JAMES HOWORTH One of the first white boys iborn in Otago, Mr Jamfes Howorth, died re : cently at his residence, " Walton Park," Fairfield. Mr Howorth, who was the eldest son of the late Mr Thomas Howorth, who came to New ' Zealand in 1850. in the ship Poictiers. was born aV Green Island in 1855. He
was a grandson of Mr James Ho worth, \a London barrister. In his early days, the days of the Gabriel's Gully gold rushes, and of Cobb'e coaches. Mr Howorth used to walk from his home to the East Taieri School. He was later the first Crown Prosecutor in Otago. As a young man Mr Howorth excelled at long-distance running, and was the possessor of several ' silver cups. He was a keen sportsman, and enjoyed considerable success as an owner and trainer of horses, bemgona of the best trotting riders of his time. Mr Howorth always enjoyed the hest of health, and was a regular attendant of the Presbyterian Church till shortly before,his death. Of a kindly disposition, lie was a true friend to ail with whom he came in contact. ._ Mr Howorth was buried from his home whence his grandfather drovo in the n.arlv days to Dunedin to attend the law'business of Messrs J2oworth. Barton, and Howorth. He is survived by bis wife, a son, and a daughter.
