General MacArthur stated that _he •will open the occupied areas to servicemen's wives about May 1, and hoped Congress will permit iree transportation of all ranks. However, he warned that living conditoins were not like America to-day. but instead resembled pioneering conditions of the coveredwagon days. (The War Department announced on February 1 that dependents will be permitted to join servicemen o£ all ranks overseas, providing adequate housing, subsistence and -medical wise are available.)
