GREAT COON'S NEXT PSALM BACK AGAIN (Special.) INVERCARGILL, Jan. 26. F. W.jEllis has Psalm bade in work, and she is a picture of condition, if • on the big-.side. The Salmagundi filly has not been, in action since she won the Dunedin Guineas in October, but it is hoped to have her ready for Easter racing. Psalm has furnished into a grand type of mare, and if she can be kept on her feet there is no saying how far she will go. In five starts she has only been beaten once—and that by the Derby winner, A 1 Sirat, as a two-year-old last season. Although Great Coon was not produced at Otautau, there is nothing amiss with him whatever, and although . his tasks have not been of a serious . nature he has been putting plenty of dash into his work. Great Coon’s next appearance will: be in the Winton Cup, and in spite of the fact that he is at the top of the handicap he will be hard to beat'. F. W. Ellis has both Nigger Lad and invulnerable back. Both are very much on the _ robust side, but they strip, well. Nigger Lad has -been out for almost 18 months, and if,he stands up to work there will be great possibilities in the half-brother to Nigger ißoy. A jumping career is intended for Invulnerable, whose two : yeai>old form was of a high order. The big Defaulter four-year-old Debater is a regular worker in T. E. Parkhurst’s team, and he will make his first appearance at Winton. He does not impress as the type to develop early speed. Pankhurst also has in his stable the yearling colt by Beau Vite from Lady-Ina, purchased by Mr 'A. Mclntosh at the national sales -for SOOgB. He is a grand type of colt. Sing Sing is a regular worker at ■ Invercargill, but she appears to be moving short in her .work, and . is not at her best. , Bay.reuth is on the easy list at the , present time, but he is likely to be brought in at, the end of the monthin readiness for Easter racing. Although he has not raced for some time, Sea, Power is in good solid condition, and he will be expected to race prominently, at the Gore meeting. Sea Power is one of the best hack stayers in sight at the present time. . Bonny Flight and Victory Flight are down to reappear at the Gore meeting. Both have been, off the scene since the spring. Bonny' Flight will be a welcome addition to the open sprint Tanks; and it would not be surprising to find her .tackling middle 1 distances later on. Victory Flight has been a disappointment so far, although, he appears to be possessed of plenty, of speed. No novice at Invercargill is working better than Starlee, and the Straightcourse gelding will be. in demand at Winton. He was • placed in en open hack sprint iii his last' start, and • the novice company he will meet in his . next start will not be as difficult. ‘ The. Winton- meeting will open the steeplechase season, but the jumpers engaged . are not a particularly good lot. Geniality; -'four-year-olds- halfbrother by Sir Simper to useful jumpers in Tursfki-and Gerameal, has - been schooled during the week, and for a newcomer; be' has shaped well. Sergeant Major, a Salmagundi gelding from Gold Silk (the dam of Lochie River) has shown some promise over country, while*btbers to put : m an appearance at headquarters have been Sister Modesta (a half-sister to Bally Brit and Shillelagh Wood), Safe Light, and Double Light. Also in the Hazlett team is the 1943 Grand National winner, Anglo, French, who has been' off the scene for almost 18 months. He is in first-class order to begin work, and the knee injury which kept him out of action last season is not expected to worry him. .At Winton F. Langford has Slayer in again, and Marquee is being, prepared with a jumping team in vj*w. Longford has also Fairy’s Special,: Miss Lancer, and Shantyinan (the last-named pair being out ofUno, the dam of T.risox) , ' with jumping careers in view this winter. Grand Pal is on the easy list, but J. Gray intends taking him up again at the beginning of the week. The Man’s -Pal two-year-old will be taken to the Dunedin meeting next month, after which he will he put aside until next season: Black Light is again in work at Invercargill after a few weeks off. She was put Aside -after , her spring racing, and is ; carrying a lot of'condition 'at. the present time
