WELDED BULKHEADS

THE HEW ARCADES LONDON, January 25. . Vickere-Armstrong to-day, for th"« first time, applied a new method to shipbuilding, when welded! prefabricated bulkheads and tank-top panels were placed in position on the new Orion liner Orcades, says ' The Times.' The new method will save approximately 900 tons of structural steel in this '29.000-ton liner, increasing the carrying capacity by about 2,000 tons ; , as compared with a similar ship of prewar design." It is claimed that further welding of major components will reduce vibration and noise and save 25 ner cent, of the titne required! f6r the completion of the hull. The Orcades is expected to be launched before the end of the year.
