DAMAGED COLLIER

TOW TO NELSON DECIDED; ON Westport entry, dangerous for crippled vessel (P.A.) WESTPORT, January 24. The Union Company's collier Karepo left at 5 o'clock this afternoon for Nelson escorted by the _ Wellington Harbour Board's tug Toia. The damaged vessel had been waiting in the roadstead since she came off the reef at The Steeples (Cape Foulwind) early on Wednesday morning, and it was decided late to-day that it would be too hazardous to attempt a bar crossing with the Karepo down at the head and a slight list to port owing to the water in the forward hold. The bulkheads are holding and the pumps are controlling the water satisfactorily., so that the diversion to Nelson was considered a safe decision. The weather is fine and the sea moderate. Temporary repairs will be effected at Nelson, after which the Karepo will go to Wellington fcr permanent repairs.
