LAUNCHING OF PORT SHIP LADY FREYBERG TO OFFICIATE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 24. Lady Freyberg, wife of General Sir Bernard Freyberg, Governor-General designate of New Zealand, haß accepted an invitation to launch a new ship ouilding for the Port Line r,t the Clydebank yard of John. Brown and Co. Ltd., Glasgow. In honour of Lady Freyberg, the ship will be named Port Wellington. The launching ceremony will take, place on February 4. Cabled advice to this effect has been received by the Port Line from its head office in London. The Port Wellington, which is one of the five new ships under construction in lie United Kingdom for the Port Line, will measure 12,000 tons gross, with a deadweight. carrying capacity of 11,800 tons and a service speed o'f 16 knots. It has been specially designed to meet the exacting requirements of ihe New Zealand refrigerated cargo trade The Port Wellington will have six holds, five of which will be fitted for the carriage of perishable produce, the total insulated space being 510,000 cubic feet. The chief feature of the new vessel will be her scientific equipment for the storage and conveyance of foodstuffs. She will be fitted with special gas-tight chambers for the carriage of chilled beef. The process, which enables chilled beef to be carried over long distances in * carbon dioxide gas, was developed at the low temperature station of the department of scientific research, Cambridge University. The accommodation for officers and crew will be 'of the latest type, and there will bs single and double berth state rooms for 24 passengers.
