ENGLISH TRAIN COLLISION
TEN BELIEVED DEAD HOME SECRETARY A PASSENGER LONDON, January 5. > At least 10 are believed to be dead and many more injured as. the result of a collision to-day between the Lon-don-Edinburgh express and part of a goods train on the main line near Ferryhill Station, in Durham. The goods train was travelling south when it became divided on the down grade. The rear part, gathering speed on the slope, caught up with the front section and crashed into it. The wreckage spread over both the up and down lines, and the express, before a Warning could be given, hit the smashed goods trucks. The engine and 10 coaches were derailed.
The Home Secretary, Mr Ohuter Ede, was travelling to South Shields, which is in his constituency, in the express. He was uninjured. Twelve men, three women, and, a little girl were removed to Durham Hospital. Some were badly hurt.
