GERMAN ESPIONAGE

WAR-TIME OPERATIONS IN SWITZERLAND BERNE, January (3. A Federal Council report on espionage reveals that 10 German soldiers entered Switzerland wearing civilian clothes in 1940 with instructions to blow up Swiss installations in revenge for the shooting down by the Swiss of German planes flying over neutral territory. Nine of the 10 were captured and sentenced to life imprisonment. The tenth escaped and managed to return to Germany. The report said the German espionage system during the war was centred on the Legation at Berne and the Consulate at Zurich, whence information was transmitted to Germany, sometimes in letters addressed to an evangelical mission at Stuttgart.
