NORTHERN TOURNEY COMPLETED (P.A.) HASTINGS, Dec. 30. A high'standard was witnessed when the finals of the North Island lawn teniiis championships were played in Hastings yesterday in fine weather and before a large crowd. The men’s singles title went to S. Painter (Wellington), the women’s singles to Mrs J. McVay (Wellington), the riien’s doubles to N. V. Edwards (Hutt Valiev) and B. S. McKenzie (Wellington). the women’s doubles to Mrs R. V. Bobb and Miss M. Snelling (AVellington), and tho mixed’doubles to McKenzie and Airs AlcVay. Brilliant tennis was played by Painter in the men’s singles final, in which he showed courtcraft and tactics of a high order. Edwards fought back well, but at times he was unable to counter Painter’s changing pace and spin. Following were the results: — —Alen’s Singles.—• Semi-final.—Painter won by default from J. W. Gunn. Final.—Painter beat N. V. Edwards, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1. —Women’s Singles.— Final.—Mrs J. McVay beat Mrs B. V. Robb, 6-2, 1-6, 6-1. —Men’s Doubles.— Semi-finals. —Edwards and McKenzie beat D. Livingston and J. Roach, 6-3, 6-4; Painter and Robb beat J. W. Gunn and Mayson, 6-2, 4-6, 6-0. Final.—Edwards and AlcKenize beat Painter and Robb, 6-2, 6-3. —Women’s Doubles.— Final.—Airs R. V. Robb and Miss N. Snelling beat Mesdames J. McVay and J. Graham, 7-5, 3-6, 6-2. —Alixed Doubles.— Quarter-finals. —R. V\. Robb and Airs Robb beat Edwards and Airs Edwards, 6-4, 6-0; R. S. AlcKenzie and Airs AlcVay heat J. W. Gunn and Miss E. Attwood, 6-3, 9-7. Semi-finals. AlcKenzie and Airs AlcVay beat Painter and Aliss Snelling, 6-4. 6-2; Robb and Airs Robb beat .1. C. Charters and A!r3 J. Graham, 6-4, 6-2.

Final.—AlcKenzie and Mrs McVay beat Robb and Airs Robb. 6-4. 8-6.
