GELIGNITE EXPLOSION

PART OF SETTLEMENT WRECKED A NEW SOUTH WALES SENSATION (Rec, 9 a.m.) SYDNEY, December 30. Part of Captain’s Flat, a mining settlement about 40 miles from Canberra, on the southern tablelands, was wrecked last night by a violent gelignite explosion. Senior police officers were sent from Goulburn and Sydney. The explosion wrecked part of a club in which about 15' persons were playing billiards or looking on. Tt smashed the walls of adjoining houses and shattered windows 100 yards away. Twentythree persons escaped with minor shock and there were no serious injuries. Experienced miners estimate that there must have been 51b of gelignite placed under oup corner of the club.

The police have not yet been able .to establish a motive for the outrage.
