A surprise result in the sixth round of the chess championships this morning was the defeat of Stewart (Canterbury) by McGilvray (Otago). The best-contested game of the round, however, was that between Wade, the present champion, and McNabb (Wellington), which the latter won. Steele (Wellington) beat Darwin (Canterbury), and Lepviikmonn (Wellington) beat Hardy (Wellington). Both are now the only unbeaten players, and Steele, with five wins and a .draw, is half a point ahead of Lepviikmann, who has four wins and two draws. Other championship results this morning: Abbott beat Kelling, Gyles beat Mrs Abbott. Wood (Wellington) met his first reverse in the major open, being beaten by Mitchell (Canterb\ry). Sim (Palmerston North)
