THE PALESTINE OUTRAGES 2,000 JEWS INTERROGATED STERNEST REPRESSIVE MEASURES TAKEN (Rec. 12.55 p.m.) JERUSALEM, December 28. Almost 2,000 Jewish residents of Jerusalem were detained for questioning after last night's attacks on police headquarters. It was the biggest mass arrest in Palestinian history, and included all males up to the age of 60 in the Bezalel district, where the assistant superintendent of police was killed by machine gun fire while engaging the attackers. All the lesidents in the city's second largest hotel, the Eden, -were also removed to the prison, which was quickly filled, necesitating the removal of the overflow to military camps. The authorities are now releasing many detainees after questioning. Searches went on in Jerusalem throughout the day, and British troopß throughly searched the Eden Hotel after the staff and residents had been arrested They took similar action m other houses. Reuter's correspondent in Jerusalem says it is apparent that the Government proposes to deal with the situation at full strength. A strict curfew is being enforced, and has been accompanied by unprecedented Military measures, such as suspension of the telephone service. Curfew passes are being issued most sparingly; even surgeons and nurses are not permitted on the streets except in emergency. The curfew cut off 100,000 people in Jerusalem from the 200,000 at TeUAviv.
