NORTH ISLAND TOURNEY
(P.A.) HASTINGS, December 28. The best display given so far in the North Island championship lawn tennis tournament at Hastings was provided to-day by N. V. Edwards (Wellington), the former New Zealand champion and Davis Cup player, and J. T. Mayson, one of Auckland's top-ranking players. Edwards finally won, but not without losing a marathon second set to the Auckiander. In the quarter-finals of the men's singles, J. W. Gunn (Auckland) beat R. S. McKenzie (Wellington) after losing the first set. In the semi-final round Edwards had his revenge on E. V. Robb (Wellington), by whom he was beaten in the recent Wilding Shield match. The finalists in the men's singles will be Edwards and the winner of the match between Gunn and S. Paynter (Wellington). The women's singles has resolved itself into a final match between the Wellington players, Mrs J. McVay and Mrs R. V. Robb. Results:— MEN'S SINGLES. —Quarter-finals.— S. Painter beat D.
