“CLIPPING THE CHURCH.”—An ancient Christian ceremony, which had its roots in the long-ago pagan religions of our remote forefathers, has been revived by the present incumbent of picturesque Sulgrave Church, Northants, England. This is the ceremony of Clipping the Church, and takes place on the fourth Sunday in Lent, called “Mothering Sunday.” On Mothering Sunday each, person, so far as he is able, should attend his “ mother church.” After the service, congregation and vicar join hands to “ clip the church”—that is, to surround the church with worshippers. The children have their particular part in the service on this day. They each present their mothers with a bunch of violets gathered in the surrounding woods. The children enjoy this quaint revival, In the background of the picture is the fine old Tudor door, bearing the date 1564. The church is the “ mother church ” of the ancestors of George Washington.
