MINER’S LIFE
NEW PICTURE UNDER PUBLIC OWNERSHIP BRITISH MINISTER'S OPTIMISM (Ree. 10.45 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 27. To attract more labour to the coal mines Mr Shinwell has appointed Mr Noel F. Newsome as director of recruitment in the Ministry of Fuel Power. Mr Newsome, who is 40 years old, became director of the 8.8. C. European service in 1939,. and served later in the psychological warfare division oif Shaef.
The Exchange Telegraph says! Mr Shinwell is satisfied that the new prospects for the industry under public ownership make it a promising career. The re-organised and highly-mechanised methods of the future call for a high degree' of technical knowledge, the training for which should specially appeal to boys with a mechanical bent. Moreover, the high wage level and security, the improved safety, and the health, welfare, and housing facilities, present an entirely new picture of mining life, of which Mr Shinwell thinks the pifblic should be enlightened.
