CANTERBURY BEATS AUCKLAND

WIN ON FIRST INNINGS (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 27. After a game which provided more ups and downs than the average, Canterbury. after a further collapse in thesecond innings, obtained a first innings win in the Plunket Shield match against Auckland, which was concluded to-day. Rain delayed the start of play to-day and the Canterbury innings was not resumed until shortly before 3 p.m. Canterbury required 204 runs to win outright with nine wickets in hand, and there were 173 , minutes left for play. Uttley began as if he was playing in a club match and added 25 to his score in even time before getting caught. The wet wicket was a handicap to Cowie, who cut his run down, considably and, bowled at three-quarters of his usual speed, Nevertheless during the afternoon the ball got up awkwardly on frequent occasions. When Uttley went out Canterbury’s chances of getting the runs diminished, and when Anderson and Burgess failed to get going five wickets were down for 59, with nearly two hours left to play. Shand and Butterfield, the heroes of the first innings, held Auckland out for 45 minutes, and then Butterfield and Scott stayed in a further .hour to save the game for Canterbury. Butterfield gave a fine display of defensive batting and Scott, after being dropped soon after he came in, also resisted his natural inclination to hit and played a valuable innings. Several batsmen lost their wickets through playing forward on the wet wicket, six of the seven wickets lost being to catches. Cowie, even at a reduced pace, still looked dangerous. Cleverley, was the best of the others, a strong ’ southerly wind assisting his swing. The Auckland fielding, apart from Scott’s chance, was again good. Scores: — AUCKLAND.
