GILROY APPOINTMENT AS CARDINAL PROPER CHOICE OF AUSTRALIAN (Rec. 11.40 a.m.) SYDNEY, Deg. 27. The Minister of Information. Mr A. A, Calwell, has been attacked for criticising the appointment of Dr Gilroy as cardinal. Mr Jfistice Brennan, of the Queensland Supreme Court, saidi “ Itill becomes a Cabinet Minister to speak in derogatory terms of the choice of Dr Gilroy as cardinal, It is worse that Mr Calwell should arrogantly assume that his views are tJio.se of Australian Catholics. Tliaiik God rho Catholic Church is one and undivided, and resents and ignores outside interforneee.” Mr J (Roberts, director and acting secretary of the Australian Natives’ Association, said: ‘‘We object to Mr Calwelj’s suggestion because Dr Gilroy is a distinguished Anzac and an Australian, and the Australian Natives’ Association stands for Australian appointments where Australians ore fitted for such a position,” Sir Roberts added that if Mr Colwell's Government objected to Archbishop Panjpo, the proper diplomatic procedure would be to have ~him recalled through, the correct channels, and not by violent outbursts in the Press.
